After years of planning, the renovations of the Newtown Community and Cultural Centre are officially underway. Expected to cost the Wellington City Council $2.7 million, the renovations will bring a long-awaited freshness to the centre, making it more accessible and better able to meet the needs of the community. Community Centre Coordinator Eryn Gribble said the renovations had been met with excitement from locals, who have had many opportunities to input their own ideas. “Our role was to consult with the community; the new centre is an example of developing change as the community calls for it.”

Report by Carrie Atkinson Tattoo guns and people alike are buzzing for Sunday’s ‘Inked and Empowered’ fundraising day. From 10am, 19 female identifying tattoo artists will take residence at Dr Morse tattoo studio in Cuba Street for the flash tattoo event. All profits will be donated to the Wellington Rape Crisis charity. Organiser Louise Macpherson expects an impressive turnout, and hopes this will result in a large donation for Rape Crisis. “We have around 2500 people interested. Realistically our goal is to raise $10,000, but ideally hope for $20,000,” she said. Joining the many tattoo artists will be a variety of other female-run businesses and organisations, such as Body Electric pole dancing and Endo Warriors Aotearoa.
