The Kerala High Court on Monday adjourned to March 17 hearing on a writ petition filed against the government order declining sanction for prosecuting the accused in the corruption case relating to procuring inferior quality raw cashew nuts from abroad by the Kerala State Cashew Development Corporation.
The petition was filed by Kadakampally Manoj of Kollam. According to him, the CBI had taken over the investigation into the case following a High Court directive. In fact, the CBI had already completed its investigation and prepared a final report. The CBI then sought sanction under Section 19 of the Prevention of Corruption Act for prosecuting INTUC State president R. Chandrasekharan and former managing director of Kerala State Cashew Development Corporation K.A. Ratheesh,both accused in the case . However, the government had refused the request.

While public sector welcomes measures, private processors say they got a raw deal Kerala Budget 2021 has generated mixed response from various quarters in the cashew sector with private processors complaining they were offered a raw deal.
While an outlay of ₹40 crore has been set aside for Cashew Board, ₹63 crore goes into the disbursal of gratuity arrears and ₹10.5 crore has been earmarked for the modernisation of factories run by the Kerala State Cashew Development Corporation (KSCDC) and the Kerala State Cashew Workers Apex Industrial Cooperative Society (Capex). Since maximising domestic production is an important goal, ₹5.5 crore has been sanctioned for the extension of cashew cultivation.

Literacy mission’s programme for labourers in KSCDC factories Around 14,000 cashew labourers working in the 30 factories of Kerala State Cashew Development Corporation (KSCDC) now have a chance to continue their education and apply for higher positions. As part of a programme jointly launched by KSCDC and the Kerala State Literacy Mission Authority (KSLMA), the first batch of 418 students from the workforce will start attending the classes on Monday.
Classes arranged at the factories will follow COVID-19 protocol and Class 10 equivalency courses will be conducted in the initial phase.
