On Saturday, in a 65-55 loss to Fresno State the 11th league loss of the season for the Lobos (5-11, 1-11 Mountain West) sophomore guard Kurt Wegscheider had his starting job of the previous three games taken away.

Prior to Saturday’s brunch-hour Lobo tipoff, somebody tipped me off to this: For all the New Mexico men’s basketball stress coming into Saturday, they’d (1) won the games they were supposed to win and (2) lost to the league teams expected to be superior.
Well, as for (1), that got shot out of the sky big time, didn’t it? Given Saturday’s opponent (San Jose State, minus its top scorer), the margin of defeat (83-71) and other context (the Lobos had just drubbed this team two days earlier), can you recall a more dispiriting defeat by your UNM basketball team?

Both results and circumstances have given University of New Mexico men’s basketball players every opportunity to let frustration or emotion get the best of them.
Emmanuel Kuac, the 6-foot-7 sophomore forward, probably had as much reason for dissent as any. He went from opening game starter at Rice to a healthy scratch one week ago in the team’s win at Dixie State after a month of struggles with turnovers, shooting and general fit leading to his move to a new position.
