Memorial held for DeSoto deputy one year after he drowned saving his son

DESOTO COUNTY, Miss. – The parents of the DeSoto County deputy who died last year after saving his son opened their home Thursday to his former friends and colleagues.
For 12 hours, tributes came pouring in for Deputy Williams Nichols, a 16-year DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office veteran who served as director of the Search and Rescue unit.
In July 2020 while on a family vacation in Florida, Nichols’ 10-year-old had been swept out by a powerful current. Nichols managed to save his son, but ultimately died himself.
The Hickory Public Schools Board of Education approved an Eagle Scout project, discussed summer school plans and said farewell to an administrator during its regular meeting Tuesday.
UPDATE: The teen boy has been found.
SOUTHBOROUGH Police are asking for the public’s help to find a teenage boy who ran away from home on Wednesday.
Police are looking for Hayden Thorpe, 16.
Thorpe was last seen Wednesday. He was reported missing at 8:30 p.m. after he didn’t return home from skateboarding with a friend or friends in Marlborough, police said.
Southborough police have been in contact with several other law enforcement agencies since Thorpe was reported missing to try to determine where he is.
Thorpe is described as being 6 feet 1 inch tall, weighing 190 pounds with curly brown hair and blue eyes.
