QB Sam Darnold | Winner
I m stating the obvious here, right? Sam Darnold had an atrocious offensive line, zero weapons, and zero coaching during his tenure with the New York Jets. The second Darnold was traded, he already had more help than he did in New York but Carolina added to that in the 2021 NFL Draft. The selection of Terrace Marshall Jr. and Shi Smith give Darnold two more options in the passing game and some more help in the backfield with running back Chuba Hubbard - a former Heisman candidate. The offensive line is still a work in progress but hey, at least Carolina is making an effort. Brady Christensen (3rd round pick) and Deonte Brown (6th round pick) may need time to develop but it does give the Panthers depth up front. Oh yeah, and they passed up on taking Justin Fields at No. 8
We heard rumblings about 24 hours before the first round that the Cardinals were likely to take Collins, though he was someone expected to go in the mid-to-late 20’s. Could they have traded back and landed him? Maybe. But his versatility combined with that of Isaiah Simmons and Budda Baker make this a tough defense to play against. Moore makes so much sense in the second round, as we still don’t know if Larry Fitzgerald will return. No matter what, he’s a perfect fit to play the slot in their offense. I liked Gowan better than Wilson, so getting him two rounds later saved their score a bit, as Wilson seemed like a bit of a reach. If there’s one thing I would’ve liked to see them do, it was to add a nose tackle seeing as many of them fell much further than expected.

The longest weekend in the NFL is over and the league looks a lot different as a result. In totality the 2021 NFL Draft was an armchair scout’s dream. What the class lacked in top-end, sure-thing superstar talent it more than made up for with a deep, varied group of players with the potential to be average-to-great starters.
We already recapped the winners and losers after night one, but with all seven rounds in the books things look very, very different. Some of the teams that killed it in the first round fell off considerably when the dust settled, while others who made questionable opening night decisions ended up with monster classes with years of tone-setting potential. Then there’s the Texans, who I’d say tried their best, but I’m not sure they tried their best.

Judging how draft classes will end up is very difficult so immediately after the event. This exercise is an educated guess based on the pre-draft perception of prospects, team needs and fits. A number of teams had impressive drafts last weekend so narrowing it down to just five was very difficult.
