Workington Conservative MP, Mark Jenkinson, welcomed the Governments brand new £3 billion bus strategy. CUMBRIA County Council will receive £1.5 million from the Department for Transport (DfT) to ‘boost’ local transport links in the area The funding, which is part of the Rural Mobility Fund initiative, will be used to deliver a trial pilot scheme of improved transport solutions for local residents in four key areas in Cumbria. Communities in and around Egremont, St Bees, Penrith, Ulverston and Wigton will be included in the first phase of the initiative in Cumbria. Cllr Keith Little, Cumbria County Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, said: I am pleased to welcome this funding, and that the DfT recognises the importance of improved rural transport solutions in areas such as Cumbria.
A LANCASHIRE building company has been honoured with an award for engineering a bridge over the River Eamont in Cumbria. The new Pooley Bridge is the UK s first stainless steel road bridge and was built by Preston-based Eric Wright Civil Engineering, replacing the original bridge that had been build in 1764 The bridge, which has now named Best Civil Engineering Project by the Civil Engineering Contractors Association, was constructed during the height of lockdown before being opened in October 2020. Eric Wright Civil Engineering managing director Diane Bourne said: “We are so proud that Pooley Bridge has been recognised by the judges to win this award from our peers in the Civil Engineering Contractors Association.
