Residents watching school buses leaving Fulford School along Fulfordgate in 2018 Picture: Richard Doughty ANGRY residents fear a golden opportunity to rid their streets of a twice-daily traffic nightmare is set to be wasted under plans for a new access road into a York school. Householders have complained for years about the “absolute chaos” in Fulfordgate every weekday morning and afternoon, when a convoy of school buses trundles along to enter and leave Fulford School, and when parents also drop off and pick up their children. They hoped a proposed new access road, directly into the school from the A19 via Germany Beck, would solve their problem.

York s city walls turn blue Picture: Kris Brown York s iconic city walls will be lit blue to coincide with the return of the ‘Clap For Heroes’ at 8pm this evening (Thursday). Council chiefs say the move is to mark the start of 2021 and recognise the efforts of essential workers. Councillor Keith Aspden, leader of City of York Council, said: “2021 has begun with another challenge for us all, and our key workers have yet again proven to be invaluable. We are happy to see the return of ‘Clap For Heroes’ as it gives us all a chance to celebrate their amazing efforts over the last 10 months.
GRITTING rounds and bin collections will be prioritised in coming days - but the council is warning people to expect disruption as increasing numbers of staff may be off sick due to covid. A spokesperson for City of York Council has said it is inevitable that frontline workers will get ill with the virus as the infection rate rises and this could make it difficult to carry out key services - including waste collection and gritting. Frontline workers will get regular symptom-free covid tests, be placed into stricter work bubbles and staff will be moved from other departments to help waste and highways services to minimise disruption.
