State Parks says repairs on the road leading up to Hearst Castle need to be completed before the landmark can reopen to the public.

Hearst Castle is expected to reopen in early 2022.
The historic landmark in San Simeon closed on March 15, 2020, due to the pandemic. Now more than a year later, itâs still closed as State Parks tackles emergency repairs to the road that leads to the castle.
Piece of California’s Highway 1 Near Big Sur Collapses
A large chunk of California’s Highway 1 near Big Sur collapsed and fell into the Pacific Ocean after a winter storm triggered a mudslide, officials said.
A California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) Fifth District message warned drivers of the closure on Jan. 29 from a “partial washout.” The washout occurred near Rat Creek about 15 miles south of Big Sur, according to Caltrans, which added that Highway 1 remains open from Carmel to the town of Big Sur.
Photos posted from the scene showed a significant piece of the hillside and road missing. Due to the size of the missing chunk, it appears that the section of Highway 1 will remain impassible for a considerable amount of time.

If you were planning on traveling along the Big Sur coast, you re out of luck.
That s because a portion of Highway 1 is no longer driveable after being washed away in the storm.
The closure could mean another blow to businesses already dealing with revenue loss from COVID. Meanwhile, crews are on scene assessing the damage, trying to determine how to rebuild the iconic stretch of highway. This was basically a debris flow within the burn scar of the Dolan Fire, said Jim Shivers, Caltrans District 5 Spokesperson.
The road completely gave way at Rat Creek at mile marker 30. That s about 45 minutes from Ragged Point Inn just south of Eslan.
