At least 12 people died after last week s winter storm that brought five inches of snow or more to Middle and West Tennessee and plunged temperatures below freezing.
While the snow stopped Thursday, the snow and ice didn t thaw out until the weekend, when the latest deaths occurred. At least three children died in weather-related incidents: Campbell Martin died in Brentwood in a sledding accident; Benjamin Luckett died in Millington trying to save his sister from a pond; and most recently, a child in McNairy County died in a partially frozen pond.
The McNairy child s identity hasn t been released due to ongoing issues identifying her biological family. McNairy County Sheriff Guy Buck said the 8-year-old girl was staying with people who weren t her biological family and the Department of Children s Services is involved.
A 9-year-old boy has tragically died after a sledding accident in Brentwood, Tennessee.
The fatal incident occurred on Tuesday when four children were sledding in a tube down Seward Road, the Brentwood Police Department said in a statement.
The tube was being pulled by an ATV driven by the boy s father when it slid through ice and collided with a mailbox, according to police.
The boy identified by local news outlet WTVF as Campbell Martin suffered critical injuries and was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he died.
The three other children on the tube were not injured, according to police.
