Cameron County Judge Eddie Trevino and local health officials are urging residents, especially younger age groups, to get vaccinated to protect against COVID-19, including the highly contagious Delta variant that is expected to make its way to the Rio Grande Valley.

While almost 68% of people have been vaccinated in Cameron County, Health Authority Dr. James Castillo said historical data shows that the Valley can expect to see Delta variant cases begin to show up within the next two months.

Jun. 11—Three more Cameron County residents have died from COVID-19 related causes, the county health department reported Thursday. The deaths were reported in Brownsville and San Benito and included a man in his 40s, a woman in her 60s and a woman in her 70s, Cameron County Public Health said in a statement Thursday. This raises the total number of COVID-19 related deaths reported in Cameron .
To control the spread of COVID-19, Cameron County Sheriff Eric Garza announced Saturday that inmates of the Cameron county jail system will be vaccinated against the disease.
