State commission for Asian Pacific Americans support preventative anti-Asian Hate funding State commission for Asian Pacific Americans support preventative anti-Asian Hate funding April 19, 2021 To help combat hate crimes against Asian Pacific Americans (APA) and discrimination taking place during the pandemic, the Michigan Asian American Affairs Commission (MAPAAC) supports the proposed COVID-19 funding brought forth by members of the state legislature. On March 31, 2021, MAPAAC received a copy of a letter signed by Senator Stephanie Chang, along with State Representatives Padma Kuppa and Ranjeev Puri addressed to Chairman Jim Stamas of the Senate Appropriations Committee and Chairman Thomas Albert of the House Appropriations Committee. The letter urged for the next COVID-19 supplemental appropriations bill to include funding to prevent anti-Asian hate in Michigan.

MIOSHA takes action to protect workers, extends emergency rules amid surge in COVID-19 cases MIOSHA takes action to protect workers, extends emergency rules amid surge in COVID-19 cases   Tuesday, April 13, 2021 LANSING, Mich. - As broad community spread of COVID-19 continues, the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) within the Michigan Dept. of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO) has extended its emergency rules, originally issued October 14, 2020, to protect Michigan workers, businesses, customers and communities from the spread of COVID-19. The emergency rules have been extended until October 14, 2021, but can be modified or withdrawn at any time in response to changes in COVID-19 spread.

Brann’s Steakhouse and Grill in Holland was fined $3,500 by the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) for violations of COVID-19 workplace safety and health requirements. The fine was issued Feb. 11. Camara Lewis, communications manager for the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity, confirmed to The Sentinel that Brann’s filed an appeal of the citation Feb. 24. In response, MIOSHA upheld the citation, but offered a settlement agreement to cut the monetary penalty in half. Lewis said the restaurant agreed to the settlement and paid the reduced penalty.

Violations at the restaurant, co-owned by state Rep. Tommy Brann, R-Wyoming, include failing to require face masks when social distancing could not be maintained and lacking protective barriers at the bar and hostess station, according to the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA). The fine, issued Feb. 11, was originally for $3,500. The inspection that led to the fine occurred in response to an employee complaint.
