PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. – After nearly a year of at-home learning and less time outdoors in organized sports, vision specialists are seeing an increase in children having problems with their eyesight.
Tanisha Maze, a mother of two young children, has worn glasses since the third grade so she was keenly aware when her daughter Danika seemed to be squinting and struggling to see.
“She kept doing it, kept squinting and was getting closer to the TV,” Maze said.
Optometrist Dr. Gabriela Olivares with the Eye Center Of Pembroke Pines is seeing more kids like Danika with myopia, which is also known as near-sightedness.

For many a common effect of aging can be droopy eyelids.
Dr. Gabriela Olivares with The Eye Center of Pembroke Pines said muscles in the lid of the eye can weaken over time which can affect the ability to see clearly.
The FDA recently approved a prescription eye drop called Upneeq which help temporarily elevate the lid.
“And it will actually elevate the top eyelid without needing surgery so it not only opens the aperture of the eye it also whitens the eye and can last for about 8 hours so this is a really nice option we can offer to our patients that is invasive like surgery is,” Olivares said.
Although Colorado law provides multiple ways of disproving a criminal defendant acted in self-defense, the Colorado Supreme Court on Wednesday considered whether jurors must agree unanimously on which single condition nullifies a self-defense argument.
In doing so, one of the justices worried that a newfound unanimity requirement could open up past criminal convictions to reversal.
âBoy, we have a lot of cases out there that you could have criminal defendants saying, âWell, we donât have a unanimity finding. We need to go back and reverse my conviction,ââ said Justice Monica M. Márquez during oral argument. âI m just concerned about the disruptive effect of such a rule.â
