Wellesley family dealt with kidney transplant, COVID

Wicked Local The Kelley family has had more than its share of hardship over the years, but they are also deeply grateful for a miracle that looked like it might never happen. Mary Jane had struggled with a rare blood cancer in the past, and by April 2019 she was  in stage 5 kidney failure, undergoing dialysis three times a week. Her husband, Jerry, launched a frantic effort to get out the word that she needed a living donor for a transplant, but so far, his campaign had not worked. Then a stranger who lived just streets away stepped forward. The transplant, which took place in October 2019, was successful but recovery was long and difficult. Today, mindful of both her heath and the threat of COVID-19, their world is largely confined to a daily ride to Starbucks and the Captain Marden s food truck. Mary Jane is able to take small walks with a cane.

Former Spoon owner opens new seafood store in Hopkinton

The Milford Daily News After nearly two decades running a popular ice cream shop and diner in town, Bill Morgan has opened a fresh seafood store right across the street from his other business. A soft opening was held Wednesday for Morgan s Harbor to Hill, at 8A Lumber St. The standalone store sits diagonally from The Spoon (1 Lumber St., No. 102), which Morgan ran for 19 years. “I had always liked the idea of opening up my own seafood shop,” said Morgan during an interview Thursday evening inside the small nautical-themed store, its interior walls painted cobalt-blue and the sound of lobster tanks humming.

Stanley Hodges celebrates his 100th birthday

Wicked Local Wellesley s Stanley Hodges turned 100 years old on Jan. 12 and his neighbors on Pickerel Road and Pickerel Terrace made sure he celebrated in style. They brought balloons, five flower arrangements, and a gift card to Captain Marden s. Hodges is, as one of his neighbors put it, a proper English gentleman, even though he spent his formative years in France. His story is an intriguing tale of war and suffering that has been passed on to the next generation. During a phone call with the Townsman (which of course included an invitation to come by for a spot of tea ), he said his daughter, Beth Olney, knows all the details of those harrowing years.
