Redrafting the 2011 MLB Draft

share-square-354938 Scouts can sense when a Draft might be special, and they had that inkling about the 2011 crop early on. They viewed it as the best class since 2005, which sent 26 of its 30 first-rounders to the big leagues and featured stars such as Ryan Braun, Andrew McCutchen and Troy Tulowitzki. Looking back 10 years later, scouts were correct about the 2011 group. The first 29 players selected and 30 of 33 first-rounders have played in the Majors, including Gerrit Cole, Francisco Lindor, Anthony Rendon and George Springer. The two biggest gems didn t even go in the first round fifth-rounder Mookie Betts and supplemental first-rounder Trevor Story and by the time all is said and done, 2011 could rank among the five best Draft years ever.

Mike Brosseau breaks up fellow Andrean grad Sean Manaea s no-hitter

PRO BASEBALL Brosseau breaks up Manaea s no-hitter: Sean Manaea s bid to throw MLB s second no-hitter of the night and fifth of the season on Friday was broken up by Mike Brosseau. The Oakland southpaw had thrown seven no-hit innings before the Tampa Bay hitter, who specializes against left-handed pitching, laced a double to lead off the eighth inning. Brosseau came in to score and tie the game 1-1 on Mike Zunino s hit. The former Andrean teammates add the latest chapter to their storied careers. ESPN reporter Jeff Passan told The Times he hadn t heard of a hitter breaking up a pitcher s no-hitter, having both attended the same high school, but Passan pondered it potentially could have happened early in a game previously. Oakland went on to win the game 2-1 on a walk-off home run by Seth Brown. Manaea went 7 1/3 innings, giving up two hits, one earned run, one walk and striking out 10. Brosseau was 1 for 3 with the double and run scored.

BYB 2021 Detroit Tigers prospects #11: C Jake Rogers

Photo by Mark Cunningham/MLB Photos via Getty Images If there is one overwhelming flaw in the Detroit Tigers attempt to rebuild the franchise, it’s the lack of trade return in the 2017 sell-off. While the Chicago White Sox landed Eloy Jimenez and Dylan Cease for starter Jose Quintana earlier that summer, the Tigers have yet to see anything from the Justin Verlander deal with the Houston Astros. Catcher Jake Rogers was never the centerpiece of the trade, but there was hope of getting an elite defensive catcher with some power. Unfortunately, on every front, the deal hasn’t gone as planned.
