Whanganui news in brief: Music festival raises big dollars for charity 15 Mar, 2021 05:44 PM 2 minutes to read Whanganui Chronicle Festival raises $11k The annual Pauls Road Live music festival raised more than $11,000 for Gabby s Starlit Hope Charity. The charity was set up by Gabby Devine in early 2014, after she was diagnosed with Ewing s sarcoma the previous year. Devine died in 2015 aged 13, but the charity has continued in her honour. Three Whanganui and New Plymouth families with children who have cancer have been gifted $3770 each. The charity thanked festival organisers Fred Loveridge and Kerry O Sullivan, the Butlers for hosting, all the local bands that performed and everyone who attended and supported the event.

Cloudy weather and occasional showers didn t stop hundreds of keen locals gathering for the 13th annual Pauls Road Live music festival on Sunday afternoon. Organiser Fred Loveridge said they dodged two bullets for the day, with New Zealand returning to Covid-19 alert level 1 to allow large gatherings from 6am Sunday, and any rough weather that would disturb the event.

Whanganui residents Dean and Marian Butler have opened their property at 42 Pauls Rd to the public every year since 2008, and the money raised at this year s event will once again go to Whanganui families who have children undergoing cancer treatment.

“I just really respect the work that Gabby’s Starlit Hope do and the memory of Gabby,” Shera said. “Because of Covid-19, this is the first year since Gabby set it up that they have not been able to fundraise enough money for the Christmas present drive.” SUPPLIED Justine Shera with some of the presents donated to children’s charity Gabby’s Starlit Hope by Glenn and Kate Demchy, owners of New Plymouth Toyworld. With the wards at both hospitals expected to be full over Christmas, Shera set herself the goal of raising $3000 to buy presents for 40 children and their parents.
