Vaccinated bus drivers will likely help schools stay open, Canton superintendent says

Thursday, March 11, 2021 - 9:14 am BY MATT LINDSEY North Country This Week CANTON Canton Central School got some good news last week, as many of their transportation employees may no longer need to quarantine if exposed to COVID-19. CCS Superintendent Ron Burke updated the Board Thursday about district transportation. “I think we have some good news in the very near future,” he said at the March 4 meeting. Burke said that if the district s most recent COVID exposure had taken place a few days later, school would not have had to shift to remote learning. This is because people who receive the COVID vaccine have a window where they do not need to quarantine if exposed to COVID. For now, that window is two weeks after their second shot, and up until 3 months.

Three St Lawrence County schools pivot to remote learning after positive COVID cases

CANTON — The Canton Central School District, Massena Central High School and Seaway Career and Technical Education Center switched to remote instruction Tuesday after receiving notification of positive COVID-19 cases. Canton Central School officials had initially announced that because six drivers were out, they would be fully remote Tuesday and expected to be able to return Thursday. But on Tuesday afternoon, officials announced in a Facebook post they were notified that a member of the district’s transportation team tested positive for COVID-19. Roughly half of the transportation department is now unable to report to work as a result of the case and quarantines from the day prior, according to the post.

Former Canton school board member to fill vacant seat following resignation

Thursday, February 25, 2021 - 6:09 am BY MATT LINDSEY North Country This Week CANTON A former Canton Central School board member has filled a seat recently vacated by Eileen Raymond. CCS Superintendent Ron Burke said Raymond stepped down due to personal reasons. The Board had three choices for the vacant seat. They could appoint someone, hold a special election or wait until the annual budget vote in May to vote. Board President Victor Rycroft noted that the timing of the vacancy was important due to members being tasked with the new school budget and a capital project. The Board decided to appoint Michelle Myers to the vacant seat. She has previous experience and board members felt her experience would be valuable dealing with the complicated nature of the budget and capital project season.

Athletes not required to take COVID-19 tests, SLC health officals say they won t revise guidance at this time

Tuesday, February 23, 2021 - 8:25 pm BY JIMMY LAWTON North Country This Week CANTON – St. Lawrence County athletes participating in high-risk sports will not be required to take COVID-19 tests. The State Education Department told schools Feb. 16 that they could not require testing of athletes playing high-risk sports like hockey and basketball, unless the county public health departments mandate it. That news is requiring some school districts that approved sports safety plans to revisit their documents as some, like Canton, had planned to require testing. “On Tuesday, the New York State Education Department issued a memo that unless required by the County Public Health Department, schools cannot require COVID-19 testing as a condition to participate in athletics or extracurricular activities. This memo has placed a number of schools around the state in a difficult situation with their plans no longer being compliant,” a statement issued by Canton Cen
