CANTON – City fire investigators have arrested a woman accused of setting her own home on fire in January after losing it to foreclosure.
The house at 604 Alta Place NW was owned by a health care company and the damage was so bad that it was torn down, according to Stark County court records.
Janet L. Caplinger, 66, of Market Avenue N, was arrested at 1 p.m Tuesday in the 3200 block of Cleveland Avenue NW by Canton Fire Department investigators on two aggravated arson warrants, according to Stark County Jail records.
She is accused of intentionally setting multiple fires inside the home around noon Jan. 9, which led to significant structural damage and the eventual demolition of the home due to an emergency tear-down ordered by the city of Canton, court records say.
The elections board indicated it is considering legal action against commissioners decision on Wednesday.
The Board of Elections announced Friday it will meet in a closed-door session at 2:30 p.m. Monday apparently to discuss whether it will ask a judge to reverse the decision.
In a statement issued in response Friday afternoon, the Stark County commissioners office, said, It is disappointing that anyone is threatening lawsuits that waste taxpayer money. It is also unfortunate that the Board of Elections misrepresented to the public and the commissioners the true cost difference separating the two competing voting systems by over 80%$ ($1.6 million).
The three county commissioners, all Republicans, voted unanimously Wednesday to reject a recommendation that the county buy 1,450 touch-screen voting machines sold by Dominion Voting Systems. The commissioners did not speak publicly on their vote but approved a resolution rejecting the purchase.
NEW PHILADELPHIA A 19-year-old Canton man has been charged with aggravated murder in connection with the shooting death of Gaven J. Carlisle, 22, on Friday.
Sajjaad Jahiem Butler is being held in the city jail pending arraignment in New Philadelphia Municipal Court, according to Detective Capt. Shawn Nelson. Butler is also charged with aggravated robbery.
U.S Marshals arrested him around 3:30 p.m. Friday in Canton while the suspect was in a vehicle, Nelson said.
He said Butler confessed to the crime. Police have the gun, bullet and shell casing.
Nelson said Butler arranged to meet Carlisle to buy marijuana with the intent to steal it.
