Through customer donations matched by the store, the Alpena Meijer raised $21,560 for St. Vincent de Paul of Alpena, the store said recently.
Through the store’s Simply Give program, Meijer matches shoppers’ donations, sometimes doubling its match to turn a resident’s $10 donation into $30 for St. Vincent de Paul.
“That just shows you how understanding and giving our community is,” said Cathy McClure, pantry coordinator at St. Vincent de Paul. “It’s been very, very helpful to the community.”
The Alpena fundraising was part of more than $7.6 million raised at Meijer stores across the Midwest through Simply Give. That equates to 76 million meals for food pantries across the Midwest. According to Feeding America, $1 equals 10 meals.

ALPENA – The United Dairy Industry of Michigan recently awarded St. Vincent Emergency Food Pantry of Alpena the Food Pantry Infrastructure Grant for critical refrigeration equipment, directly supporting the distribution of nutritious dairy foods in the community.
Food pantries have seen an increased demand for their resources since the start of 2020.
According to the 2015 Dietary guidelines, Americans of all activity levels over the age of eight should include three servings of low-fat or fat-free milk or milk products in their diet every day. Dairy is an important source of calcium and vitamin D, nutrients inadequate in most American diets.
Cathy McClure, pantry coordinator, said this opportunity came at the perfect time for the pantry as their dairy cooler had just broke down. On average, the pantry serves 60-100 families every week as families are able to come to get food once a month. Just this last fiscal year, St. Vincent Emergency Food Pantry served more t
