Flagler s Nehemiah Gilyard, 18, remembered for positivity, kindness and back flips

by: Brian McMillan and Samira Taite-Headspeth Nehemiah Gilyard was a funny, caring student with an “infectious smile” at Flagler Palm Coast High School, where he played football and ran track. He was driving alone on the night of Feb. 14, when he crashed into the trees on the side of County Road 302 and died. He was 18. “I, as well as our entire Flagler Schools community mourn the loss of Nehemiah Gilyard, a young man taken too soon from his family this weekend,” Flagler Schools Superintendent Cathy Mittelstadt wrote in a tweet. FPC football coach Travis Roland tweeted the following on Feb. 15: “How do you explain the unexplainable to your teenage players. Especially when hours before you find out the unthinkable, the defensive staff was talking about how he was about to have a breakout year as a senior! We Love You! Rest With Him”

After successful Teen Town Hall, school district plans town hall session for parents

2 months ago Share The first Teen Town Hall was held the evening of Jan. 21 and moderated by the district s two student School Board members. Flagler Schools first Teen Town Hall event went well enough that local parents are asking for their own. Parents love it, School Board member Cheryl Massaro said at a Feb. 2 School Board workshop. They want one for themselves. They want a town hall. School Board member Colleen Conklin said she d heard the same thing and had already reached out to district staff to attempt to set one up. The first Teen Town Hall was held the evening of Jan. 21 and moderated by student School Board members Brianna Whitfield and Kyleigh Ruddy, with the support of Massaro and district staff members. (Student School Board members one selected from each of the district s two high schools sit in on district School Board meetings to offer a student perspective, although they don t vote on action items.)

More analysis needed before Belle Terre swim club decision

Dear Editor: (Note: The following letter was also sent to Superintendent Cathy Mittelstadt.) This is a request to the School Board by the Belle Terre Swim and Racquet Club Advisory Committee to keep Belle Terre open and ongoing while fees for memberships and medical groups pick up as the pandemic gets under control. I represent BTSRAC 501c3 nonprofit that worked with the School Board in 2015 to keep Belle Terre open. When the pandemic struck, Belle Terre was shut down for two months. People were told to restrict their activities and stay at home as best they could.  It is remarkable that when 2019/2020 and 2020/2021 memberships are compared, paying members have only gone down from 1,378 to 1,243 and during these same periods Silver Sneakers, Renew Active, Silver and Fit and Florida Health Care are all up. The problem is that frequency of visits is down. School system employees can use the Belle Terre facilities for free. It appears few of them are. Some of the comments indicated
