SCHOOL BOARD NAMES NEW BOARD MEMBER

The Morongo Unified School District board of Trustees interviewed candidates for the district’s vacant area 5 board seat at a special meeting last night. News Director Andrew Dieleman has the details… At last night’s special meeting, the board interviewed two candidates for the vacant Area 5 seat: Shadee Johnson, a former 14-year employee for MUSD and 20-year resident of the Morongo Basin; and Roberta Meyers, a recently retired teacher of 29 years, 19 of which were with MUSD. After some post-interview deliberations, the board made a preliminary vote of 3-1 in favor of Roberta Meyers (Trustee Condley voted for Shadee Johnson). The board will finalize its selection during its next regular meeting on Tuesday, June 15.

SCHOOL BOARD APPROVES INDOOR ATHLETICS

The Morongo Unified School District board of trustees held a special meeting last night do discuss allowing the return of indoor athletics for student athletes. Reporter Andrew Dieleman has the details… At last night’s special meeting, Director of Secondary Curriculum Justin Howard outlined the district’s extensive proposal for allowing student athletes to return to indoor sports, primarily boys and girls basketball and wrestling. After a brief discussion, the board voted 4-0 (Trustee Kerri Condley being absent) to approve indoor athletics beginning April 19. The estimated 75-100 student athletes will be required to undergo mandatory COVID-19 testing twice per week with only approved athletes, coaches, and spectators allowed at practices and games.

Sara M. Whalen Site staff MONONA – Sara M. Whalen passed away at age 79 on Tuesday, February 9, 2021 after a short illness. Sara was a maker of wonderful things. She made a beautiful family with her husband John Whalen. John and Sara met in Beloit, Wisconsin in 1964 on Memorial Day weekend when Sara was teaching 4th grade in Beloit and John was working at the Beloit Corp. They married the next summer and welcomed Anne into their lives a year later. Beloit was where they made their first batch of German Yeast cookies, a yearly Christmas tradition that has been passed down to all of their children. Soon after, Sara and John moved to Janesville where John, their favorite son was born. Sara and John moved to Madison in 1970 and then soon after moved to Monona where they shared a home together for 49 years. There they raised four children, the third and surprisingly fourth, Nora and Ruth, arriving on Leap Day, 1976. Throughout the years, Sara and John’s fam
