Mayors, trustees set to hit the ground running after being sworn in

April elections bring in new boards and councils in May. For the first part of the month, area communities have been seeing new and familiar people raising their right hands, repeating after judges and other dignitaries, stating their names and promising to uphold the sanctity of their position. The Southland communities’ boards are just settling in after all the April 6 votes were certified by the officials in Cook and Will Counties. Here is a look at highlights of some of the area municipal races. Orland Park Mayor Keith Pekau and former Mayor Dan McLaughlin had a lively and heated election filled with mailers sent to residents seemingly on a daily basis.

Lockport Approves Waste Management s At Your Door Service

(Shutterstock) LOCKPORT, IL Lockport residents will now receive the At Your Door service from Waste Management after the city council approved an amendment to its contract with the business at its Wednesday meeting. City Administrator Ben Benson said the service can start as early as June, and will cost an extra $1.42 a month. At Your Door is a special collections service, where hazardous or hard-to-recycle items are picked up from your home, according to the Waste Management website. These items can include household chemicals, consumer electronics, paint, automotive products, batteries, garden chemicals, fluorescent light bulbs, flammable items, swimming pool chemicals, and syringes or lancets.

Alderman Mark Lobes was absent. LOCKPORT, IL The Lockport City Council has approved a purchase and sale agreement for 181 acres from the Chevron Environmental Management Company for $2 million. The property is located at 301 W. Second St., and was the former site of Texaco refinery. According to council documents, Texaco ceased operations on the land in 1981, and Chevron has spent nearly $500 million to clean the site. The city previously acquired 13 acres of land from Chevron as part of a property exchange agreement in 2017, council documents state.
