State Food Safety Branch Manager Talks Reality of Pandemic Rules at Restaurants

There are guidelines from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, emergency orders from the governor, and varying rules in each of Hawaiʻi s counties. Oʻahu restaurants and bars have the option to do away with social distancing if customers provide proof of vaccination or a recent negative COVID-19 test, but many restaurant operators aren’t doing so because they said they aren’t comfortable with the added responsibility. Peter Oshiro manages the food safety branch for the state Department of Health, though he stressed he is not involved in Honolulu s, or any county s, tiered reopening plan.

Now six months into her position as interim Executive Director and CEO of the Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation, Kahikina shared the latest developments about the Honolulu rail. Local Author Draws From Family Stories, Forgotten WWII Sites

Mira Books Local author Sara Ackerman draws from her own family stories and finds the connection with forgotten wartime sites. Her latest book Radar Girls hits the shelves on July 27. This inspiring and uplifting tale of pioneering, unsung heroines vividly transports the reader to wartime Hawai‘i, where one woman’s call to duty leads her to find courage, strength and sisterhood, the book s description says. Her previous book The Lieutenant s Nurse came out in 2019 and is also set against the backdrop of World War II. But as she shared with The Conversation s Catherine Cruz, she never planned on writing historical novels.
