Students win Hearst Journalism awards

Two Murray State students entered and placed in the 2020-2021 Hearst Journalism Awards Program.
The program is a collection of 14 competitions for journalism undergraduate students. There are five writing, two photojournalism, one audio, two television and four multimedia competitions each year, having to consist of already broadcast materials.
Piper Cassetto, senior television production major, won fifth place and a $1,000 scholarship in the Hearst Media TV Features competition. She entered “Pony Up,” a two-part video series that follows the Murray State Racer Girls on their journey to the Fall 2020 OVC Tournament.
News-Messenger, News Herald staffers earn 13 Ohio AP nominations

Nominations in the annual contest were announced Tuesday.
The News-Messenger and Port Clinton News Herald are in the contest s Division 1 and compete against 38 other publications, the largest number of competitors among the five divisions that are based on circulation numbers.
“It is always an honor to be nominated for the prestigious Ohio APME awards, and our team deserves the recognition for the outstanding journalism they produce on a daily basis, especially considering the obstacles and risks they are facing while working during a global pandemic,” said David Yonke, editor of the Fremont News-Messenger and the Port Clinton News Herald.
Halasz a finalist in Ohio APME newspaper contest

Xenia Daily Gazette writer Scott Halasz has been named a finalist for best sports writer in Division I of the Ohio Associated Press Media Editors’ 2020 newspaper contest.
The awards in actual order of finish – first, second and third places – will be announced during a virtual awards program along with the General Excellence, Hall of Fame, Rising Star and First Amendment winners.
Fifty-two daily newspapers submitted 1,418 entries in the contest, which featured news and sports stories, features, editorials, columns, graphics and photos from 2020.
Xenia Daily Gazette entries were submitted in Division I, for newspapers with circulations up to 7,999 and contains the most newspapers.

SIDNEY – Sidney Daily News Business Editor Kyle Shaner has been named a finalist for best business writer in Division II of the Ohio Associated Press Media Editors’ 2020 newspaper contest.
The awards in actual order of finish – first, second and third places – will be announced during a virtual awards program along with the General Excellence, Hall of Fame, Rising Star and First Amendment winners.
