News-Messenger honored with General Excellence award in APME contest

COLUMBUS - The News-Messenger was named among the top three newspapers in its division for the fifth straight year in the 2020 Ohio Associated Press Media Editors newspaper contest.
The News-Messenger won second place for General Excellence in Division 1, which includes 38 daily publications with circulations of 7,999 or less, the largest number of competitors among the five divisions that are based on circulation numbers.
The News-Messenger and Port Clinton News Herald staffers won a combined 13 awards. Our team of journalists consistently produces terrific stories and visuals year-round, said David Yonke, editor. Despite the enormous challenges of the 2020 pandemic, our reporters produced top-quality content that served our readers in many ways. I m proud of our team and grateful that their work has been recognized by the APME.

Nominations in the annual contest were announced Tuesday.
The News-Messenger and Port Clinton News Herald are in the contest s Division 1 and compete against 38 other publications, the largest number of competitors among the five divisions that are based on circulation numbers.
“It is always an honor to be nominated for the prestigious Ohio APME awards, and our team deserves the recognition for the outstanding journalism they produce on a daily basis, especially considering the obstacles and risks they are facing while working during a global pandemic,” said David Yonke, editor of the Fremont News-Messenger and the Port Clinton News Herald.
