RICHMOND, Va. (AP) Democrats who have transformed Virginia at whiplash speed over the past two years will be defending their full control of the statehouse this fall. But first, they are trying to get an usually high number of House incumbents past primary challenges.

Virginia is set to become the 23rd state to abolish the death penalty, after the state House of Delegates passed legislation Friday that would end capital punishment in the Commonwealth a day after the state Senate passed a similar bill and the governor said he plans to sign it.
The seat came open when Joe Lindsey, a Democrat who had held it since 2014, was recently appointed to a judgeship in Norfolk’s General District Court. Lindsey had to step down as a delegate in order to serve as a judge.
