The James Madison softball team stunned #1 rated Oklahoma, 4-3, in the opening game of the Women s College World Series. Page County native Kate Gordon hit a go-ahead home run in the top of the 8th inning.
JMU had taken a 3-0 lead early in the game on a Sara Jubas homeroom, but Oklahoma came back in the 3rd inning to tie it at 3-3. The game stayed tied through the regulation 7 innings. In the top of the 8th, Gordon s homerun gave the Dukes the lead that they held through the bottom of the 8th to win!

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) Kate Gordon hit a solo homer in the top of the eighth inning and Odicci Alexander threw a complete game to help James Madison stun top-seeded Oklahoma 4-3 in eight innings Thursday in the opening game of the Women’s College World Series.
It was James Madison’s first World Series game, and the Dukes (40-2) got it against a program that won national titles in 2000, 2013, 2016 and 2017 and was the runner-up in 2012 and 2019.
Alexander controlled the action. The second-team NFCA All-American threw 129 pitches and struck out nine. She faced the top of Oklahoma’s order in the eighth and escaped without allowing a run in helping the Dukes advance to a game Friday in the winners bracket against either Oklahoma State or Georgia.
Jocelyn Alo (.487) and
Jayda Coleman (.469) and
Kinzie Hansen (.453) are right behind them. Alo leads the nation with 30 dingers plus 82 RBI. Jennings is tied for second in home runs with 25 with a national high of 84 RBI. There are just too many good hitters and stats in this lineup to name without typing up a wall of words. As a team, they are hitting an astonishing .421 almost 80 points higher than the number two team Texas who finished the season hitting .342. The OU team average is higher than all but nine individual, non-Sooners, Power team players. Okie has swatted 146 four-baggers in 52 games for an eye-popping 2.81 HR per game. The next highest total is Wichita State with 103. No other team has more than 95.
