Low resident numbers bring financial hit to MSU housing
Michigan State University’s Residential and Hospitality Services has taken one of the largest financial burdens at the university due to COVID-19.
“With a COVID-19 outbreak, we ve had a lot of uncertainty about what s going on, MSU vice president for finance Mark Haas said at the Feb. 16 Faculty Senate meeting. So far, we ve run several hundred different budget and economic scenarios that we ve analyzed since March of last year.
The university was expecting the general fund to take a bigger financial hit, but after looking at other departments, it was found to be more of a bright spot.

A new medical and recreational marijuana dispensary, Pincanna, is set to open on Grand River Avenue in April.
This will be the only dispensary to open within walking distance of campus, said Rob Nusbaum a founding partner for Pincanna.
“It was really a coveted location,” Nusbaum said.

The Savannah College of Art and Design presents the 12th edition of SCAD deFINE ART, the university’s annual program of talks, tours, and exhibitions featuring work by contemporary art’s most vital voices.
This year’s dynamic online programming, presented Feb. 23–25, includes a keynote lecture by renowned New York-based interdisciplinary artist and 2021 SCAD deFINE ART honoree Sanford Biggers and a conversation between prominent Brooklyn-based artist Marcel Dzama and famed comedian Amy Sedaris, among other inspiring talks, gallery tours, and studio visits.
The virtual program complements new exhibitions on view at the SCAD Museum of Art in Savannah and SCAD FASH Museum of Fashion + Film in Atlanta, featuring work by Biggers, Dzama, and other globally recognized artists including Christto & Andrew, Kate Cooper, Helen Frankenthaler, Emily Furr, Carlos Garaicoa, the Haas Brothers, Paulina Olowska, Brandon Sadler, Rose B. A new program geared toward younger students with entrepreneurial aspirations is kicking off this spring at the Cleveland County Fairgrounds.
Local nonprofit Loveworks Leadership Inc. and the Norman Farm Market have partnered to launch a new youth startup program that will debut at the market on Saturday, April 3.
The program will focus on providing students ages 8-15 with the opportunity to showcase their entrepreneurial skills and products on Tuesdays and Saturdays at the market.
