By Andy Kahn Jul 29, 2021 • 3:12 pm PDT Deer Tick honored ZZ Top bassist Dusty Hill by covering “Cheap Sunglasses” on Wednesday at Newport Folk Festival. The performance came on the same day ZZ Top announced the death of the legendary band’s bassist, who was 72-years-old. Rhode Island-born Deer Tick, who are longtime Newport regulars, returned to Fort Adams State Park to close out the sixth and final day of the Newport Folk Festival’s Folk On event. The set saw Vanessa Carlton come out for a collaborative performance of “In Our Time.”

Black Pumas walk away with high marks Fort Adams State Park, Newport, R.I., 2021 Reviewed by Jeffrey B. Remz and Marc Cantor The Newport Folk Festival schedule listed the mid-afternoon slot on the schedule To Be Determined. Whoever made the determination to put the Austin-based band on the roster of artists on closing day deserves a big raise. Black Pumas pretty much walked away with the festival with their mid-afternoon gig on the main stage of high energy funk, soul and psychedelically-tinged blues. Lead singer Eric Burton easily overcame early microphone issues with confident swagger quickly connecting with the enthusiastic fandom.
