South Dakota growers who missed deadline may get opportunity to apply for industrial hemp license Jerry Oster, WNAXApril 21, 2021Agriculture News PIERRE, SD – Some South Dakota growers are preparing to plant industrial hemp this spring. South Dakota Industrial Hemp Association Executive Director Katie Sieverding says it depends what variety growers choose to use as to when they’ll start spring seeding. “Some varieties have a growing period that is not that long,” she explains.  “Growers can use those varieties should another crop get hailed out during the summer. They can plant over the damaged crop.” She says by working with state lawmakers they were able to iron out the rules by which industrial hemp can be grown and all those regulations are now in place.

2 months ago in Agriculture tomr Photo: WNAX The U.S. Department of Agriculture has published the final rule in the federal register concerning Domestic Hemp Production. South Dakota Industrial Hemp Association Executive Director Katie Sieverding says they are pleased with the final rule and that the USDA extended the rule for sample collection from 15 days to 30 days. She says another good change the Ag Department made with the rule is the threshold for finding negligence going from point 5 percent to one percent THC. Sieverding says now that the rule has been finalized at the federal level, the South Dakota Industrial Hemp Association will be sponsoring a bill in the state legislature to follow the federal rule that takes the sample collection from 15 days to 30 days.
