3 new bills aim to support school libraries in Michigan
Michigan schools are lagging behind when it comes to school libraries, a set of new bills is aiming to fix that.

LANSING, Mich. â Michigan has fallen behind other states when it comes to school libraries. Many are understaffed, under-resourced or have been abandoned to use as extra space.
A set of three bills in the Michigan House of Representatives is designed to fix that.

âThe reason that weâre showing up for school librarians in Michigan is because Michigan has so very few of them right now and yet school librarians are extraordinarily effective and have a high impact for children from all different backgrounds for individualized learning, said John Chrastka who serves as the executive director of EveryLibrary. His non-profit organization works to support libraries in schools.

MASON, Ohio â Because of the fatigue many students felt during a school year dominated by the COVID-19 pandemic, mental health and well-being are topping educatorsâ lists of priorities.
A program at Mason City Schools has been addressing those concerns for years and since the recent spike since the start of this pandemic. They found, over a three-week period, more than a dozen students were hospitalized with suicidal thoughts, feeling the weight of the pandemic and wishing to harm themselves.
Some states and school systems question the need to stay home, arguing that few students get sick and that the missed days in the classroom take a toll.
