Oakland’s arts and culture sector contributes to the local economy in many ways, but budget writers don’t always seem to appreciate that, many artists say.
Activists and artists are hoping to change the dynamic this year, arguing that the $1 million allocated for arts grants, fairs and festivals in Mayor Libby Schaaf’s proposed budget is not enough. They will host a virtual town hall Tuesday evening to talk about ways to shape the budget for the city’s arts and culture department, making the point that the arts sector is an important part of economic recovery.
