Urban represented McMartin teacher

Urban represented McMartin teacher SHARE by Kevin Cody In early 1984, when seven McMartin Preschool teachers were charged with 207 counts of child molestation, all of the defendants claimed innocence, including longtime teacher Betty Raidor. Nonetheless, Raidor’s attorney, Manhattan Beach attorney Walter Urban, approached the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office about the prospect of a plea bargain. The other teachers and their attorneys were furious at this perceived break in ranks. When asked by reporters if he was conceding his client was guilty, Urban responded matter of factly, “No. But it is my duty to explore all the options.” (Charges against Raidor and four of the other seven were dropped, but not until two years after their arrests. Preschool owner Peggy Bucky and her son were tried, but not convicted.)

All local, all weekend long at Labor Day weekend Hermosa Fiesta Locale

All local, all weekend long at Labor Day weekend Hermosa Fiesta Locale SHARE by Kevin Cody Local musicians, local artists, local restaurants, local breweries and local retailers will be featured in a reimagined Hermosa Beach Labor Day Weekend Fiesta, aptly renamed Hermosa Fiesta Locale. The changes were announced Tuesday by Chamber CEO Jessica Accamando. The local emphasis was prompted by the need to comply with post pandemic safety regulations. But they are also responsive to longstanding complaints from residents, and businesses about street closures and a lack of local vendors. The fair’s footprint is also being reconfigured. The traditional vendor booths on Hermosa and Pier avenues will be replaced by sidewalk booths in front of local stores, and an Arts Festival on the Community Center Lawn, hosted by the Arts Group of Hermosa Beach.
