One Marion school bus driver who tested positive for COVID-19 recently led to the quarantine of nine other drivers who had been in close contact. On Monday, nearly two dozen school bus drivers were out, some due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Marion County School Board Chairwoman Nancy Thrower said she visited transportation depot offices on Monday because of the growing crisis. She soon learned that the situation was more dire than she suspected.
School district spokesman Kevin Christian said the district has 270 bus drivers. Before the pandemic, the district had been experiencing about 10 percent absences on any given day. Now the rate is about double that.
Marion schools: 67 new COVID-19 cases amid bus driver shortage
Marion County Public Schools, which recorded 67 new COVID-19 cases this past week, is fighting through a bus driver shortage that has been exacerbated by the pandemic.
School district spokesman Kevin Christian said the district has 270 bus drivers. Before the pandemic, the district has been experiencing about 10 percent absences on any given day.
But I’d say that’s double now thanks to COVID-19 cases and direct contacts, Christian said. As a result, some drivers double- and triple-up on routes, which creates delays in getting students to school and home.
Christian added that we always need bus drivers, not just now because of COVID.
Christine Fernandez named Marion County s top teacher
Christine Fernandez, a Shady Hill Elementary School kindergarten and first-grade MCPSonline teacher who uses puppets to engage her class, was named Marion County’s 2021 Golden Apple Teacher of the Year on Friday.
Fernandez was honored at 8:35 p.m. Friday during the 31st annual Golden Apple Gala. With the honor, she will receive a three-year lease on a 2021 Hyundai Sonata from Jenkins Auto Group.
Fernandez thanked her husband, Tony, and sons, Michael and Matthew, for putting up with all those voices that I have done throughout the years. I apologize for the kindergarten voice (that) sort of comes home with me sometimes, she said. And also I want to thank all the teachers that I have come across. Through the years, each and every one of them have inspired me to be the teacher that I am today.
