TV preview by Steve Bennett
For a show that features crack addicts, multi-vehicle pile-ups and a cardiac arrest, Bloods is surprisingly silly.
Sky’s new paramedic sitcom starts with that heart attack, and co-creator Samson Kayo’s character Maleek accidentally zapping colleague Kevin (Ghost’s Kiel Smith-Bynoe) with the defibrillator. That pretty much sets the the tone for this over-the-top comedy…
After Kevin understandably decides to move on, Maleek is teamed with Jane Horrocks’s Wendy, and so the requisite mismatched partnership is formed. The streetwise South London lone wolf (even if his self-image is largely a delusion built on insecurity) reluctantly sharing his ambulance a homely, naive, and overly-friendly middle-aged divorcee from Nottingham.

Jane Horrocks and Samson Kayo star in Bloods

Bloods (Sky One) is an enjoyably silly odd-couple comedy about paramedics, with a star turn from Samson Kayo (from BBC Three’s Famalam). He plays Maleek, whom we first saw accidentally electrocuting his partner with a defibrillator. Maleek is rubbish at his job, a fact he refuses to acknowledge.
With one partner down, Maleek needed another one, and she arrived in the form of Wendy. If I tell you that Wendy is played by Jane Horrocks, you’ll know what to expect. She’s northern and quirky and an eternal optimist, and having her character arrive “from out of the area” means she can just do her own accent.

In this new comedy (Sky One), Maleekâs former paramedic partner Kevin has gone on sabbatical to Thailand. Maleek is supremely confident this has nothing to do with the fact he accidentally defibrillated Kevin on their last callout together, but then Maleek is supremely confident about most things. The brio and energy that Famalamâs Samson Kayo â who also co-created this series â brings to the role is a joy to behold. If it also manages to shock some underpowered writing into life along the way, that, too, is all to the good.
In Kevinâs absence, Maleek is paired with Wendy (Jane Horrocks). She is a perky, quirky paramedic from the north â or âEmmerdaleâ, as Maleek has it â recently divorced and on Tinder, hoping to start a new life in London. Think an older Bubble from Ab Fab, with a driving licence and graduation certificate. I find Horrocksâs perky, quirky shtick quite effortful and exhausting, but I am awa
