Wind contributes to Wednesday field fire at The Stables

A small burn pile and a large wind combined to make mischief Wednesday, giving local firefighters their first grass fire of the year.
The fire was called in around 5 p.m. at The Stables banquet facility on Ill. Route 78 south of Kewanee. By the time firefighters arrived, the fire had spread several hundred yards to a nearby field and as far as the fence line on Ill. Route 81.
The Kewanee Community Fire Department called in the Galva and Bishop Hill fire departments for mutual aid assistance.
KCFD s Greg Johnson said the wind was blowing strongly from the north on Wednesday, which luckily caused the fire to burn away from the buildings at The Stables.
