Indigenous leader and former West Australian treasurer Ben Wyatt will join the board of Rio Tinto as the mining giant continues its leadership shake-up in the wake of the Juukan Gorge disaster.
Mr Wyatt, touted as a future WA premier before quitting politics in March, will become Rioâs first Aboriginal director.
The former politician said he was deeply saddened by what happened at Juukan Gorge but was convinced Rio was genuine in wanting to change its approach to indigenous cultural heritage issues.
Mr Wyatt pushed for Rio to increase its leadership presence in WA after the blasting of 46,000-year-old rock shelters in the stateâs iron ore-rich Pilbara drew worldwide condemnation.
Former WA treasurer Ben Wyatt has blasted conservationists and activist investor groups he says are trying to exploit Aboriginal culture for their own agendas.
