Statement from the Michigan Black Leadership Advisory Council (BLAC) on COVID-19 Protocols and Vaccine Hesitancy in the Black Community
Black Americans are once again facing a challenge that affects us more than other communities - the global COVID-19 pandemic.
As COVID-19 numbers rise in Michigan, and more so in Black communities, now more than ever, we must work to keep ourselves and our families safe. That means we must mask up, practice social distancing and get tested regularly, especially if we have been around large groups of people.
Much of the programming at Grand Valley State University’s Peter C. Cook Leadership Academy revolves primarily around the 60+ students in its cohort, but their events hosting talks from community leaders are open to all. Such was the case with Kelsey Perdue, the project director of Kids Count in Michigan who was invited to give a virtual lecture on “Local Leadership from Global Experience.”
“There’s a global truth in this struggle of hunger and conflict and paranoia,” Perdue said. “We are all in the middle of this battle for justice, and as much as you may want to, you cannot excuse yourself from this fight. You might have heard the saying, that ‘no response is a response.’ Decisions will go on, with or without your direct input: decisions that cause our neighbors to go hungry.”

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Multiple Grand Rapids organizations are hosting events celebrating Black History Month, including featured speakers, community discussions, plays and exhibits throughout February.
Most of the events will be held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but there are also some socially distanced in-person programming and self-guided tours available. There are more options than ever to learn about Black culture, history and experiences.
