AUBURN â As a juvenile probation officer, Kelly Mattes typically does not see the successful cases on which she has worked.
âI donât get to see the kids that succeed, because nobody comes to the probation department unless they have to,â she said with a smile.
âWe donât see the successes. Our success is if we donât see them again.â
Mattes has served as an officer with the DeKalb County Probation Department for 25 years and was recognized for her quarter-century of service by the Indiana Supreme Court Judicial Conference of Indiana. Mattes received a certificate noting the honor during a presentation May 6 in DeKalb Circuit Court.

Santaâs âelvesâ were busy Friday, loading large bags, boxes and bicycles into a steady stream of vehicles during the six-hour Christmas for Kids toy giveaway on Friday.
And though it was chilly outside, there was nothing but smiles and Christmas cheer among the elves â actually members of the Bryan Kiwanis Club â who said it lifted their spirits to be part of an event that brings toys, and so much joy, to so many children in Williams County.
âItâs a labor of love,â said Tim Foster, of Bryan, a Kiwanian and one of about a dozen elves who loaded up vehicles with toys outside the back of the Bryan Moose Family Center Friday, completing the five week toy drive for needy local children.
