Thursday morning Kelly Galloway and a group of people walking 902 miles to end human trafficking were welcomed to Auburn by Mayor Michael McQuill, City Councilor Deb McCormick and Police Chief Shawn Butler. The 902 mile walk began May 3 in Lynchburg, VA and is call the FreeTHEM Walk. Galloway, a Buffalo native, told supporters at the Equal Rights Heritage Center she began her journey as an advocate for human trafficking victims after learning from her uncle she just is three generations removed from her family growing up on a plantation.

There was a celebration on the steps of City Hall on Saturday as community members gathered to send off a team called the FreeTHEM Walkers. The group is led by Kelly Galloway. She s the founder of Project Mona s House and the FreeTHEM Center in Buffalo. Both support victims of human trafficking. Human trafficking is modern-day slavery. Over 40.3 million people are affected, generating over 150 billion dollars annually. It is the second-largest crime on the planet. We have to care about it, Galloway said.

For years she traveled across the globe to raise awareness and rescue people who have been impacted.  She founded Project Mona’s House in Buffalo, a center designed to help human trafficking survivors and help them get back on their feet. Her latest project, she says is one of her most ambitious.  Myself and 13 other courageous and bold people are taking the journey of freedom seekers of the past like Harriet Tubman, William Box Brown and William and Ellen Craft , she told 2 On Your Side s Karys Belger.
