Handing back Australia Day awards I find the virtue signalling of prominent Australians such as Pater Kingston and Kerry O Brien highly hypocritical. They state the reason to hand back the Australia Day awards is in response to Margret Court s views and opinions on same-sex marriage and homosexuality. Further stating the intention of the country s highest honour is to foster community unity. So under the guise of unity they attack an individual who has differing views to their own on TV and radio. This seems to be the opposite of inclusive and unity. In fact it s exclusive, divisive and bullying.
LRB’s Graeham Goble & Baker Boy on Australia Day Honours List
About half a dozen names from contemporary music were among 845 Australians recognised on the Australia Day Honours List, published on January 26.
Graeham Goble, best known in a 50-year career as co-founder of Little River Band, was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for service to the performing arts as a singer, songwriter and producer.
The 73-year old’s best known composition ‘Reminiscing’ was hailed by John Lennon as one of his favourite songs and, so the rumour goes, almost recorded by Frank Sinatra.
The song, which peaked at #3 in the US, has now been played 5 million times on US radio.
And so we say goodbye to another Australia Day. Glorious sunshine on the Gold Coast. Beer and barbecues. Good times. A great day, so long as you didn t turn on the TV or the radio. Because a part of the annual tradition now is the well-worn, dreary debate about the date. For a nation that has so much to be proud of, we sure know how to talk ourselves down, especially on our national day. How to break the miserable cycle? This column does not have the answer, but offers these thoughts. 1. It s great to be Australian Most baffling to this author are the anguished Sydney and Melbourne types who appear ashamed to be Australian. A Guardian column this week opened with the line: For a long time I have not felt part of Australia, not felt Australian, not wanted to be known as Australian. You can imagine how the article progressed from there.
Radio identities on Australia Day Honours List
A number of radio identities made their appearances on the January 26 Australia Day Honours List, alongside 845 sports people, medical leaders, community workers, scientists, politicians, musicians and showbiz identities.
Graham Ross, a fixture on Australian radio and TV for four decades and an Australia Day ambassador for two, was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM).
He presented horticulture shows on the Seven Network and the ABC, and co- presented
The Garden Clinic on Sydney radio 2GB.
Also getting an AM was Genevieve Jacobs, who presented morning, afternoon and weekend shifts on ABC Radio Canberra, as well as being a board member of Canberra International Music Festival and director of the National Folk Festival.
