Mr Kingston, who is best known for his paintings that capture the energy of Sydney Harbour, was awarded the Medal of Australia in 2013 for his art and environmental activism after he helped to save harbourside icons such as Luna Park, Hinchinbrook Island and Nutcote, the home of May Gibbs, from development.
The 78-year-old said the awards aim to make the community a better place and Ms Court’s recognition contradicts these objectives.
“In these fragile times where we are all up against a pandemic of anxiety I find Margaret Court’s elevation to the highest order contrary to the premise the awards are given, that is to make our community a better place,” Mr Kingston told the Sydney Morning Herald.

ADVERTISEMENT I am sure that the Council for the Order of Australia will be aware of the controversy that surrounded Mrs Margaret Court when she was presented with a special trophy at the Australian Open last year to mark 50 years since her Grand Slam in 1970. Even within her field of achievement of tennis, there was strong dissent to her being given that honour and recognition at the Australian Open. No one disputes her achievements in tennis. However, I am sure that given the controversy surrounding Mrs Margaret Court, the Council for the Order of Australia will be well aware of the derogatory and very hurtful remarks she has made about the LGBTIQ+ community and all who support them.

It is indeed heart-warming, and it fills me with pride, to read two political opponents â the Liberalsâ Josh Frydenberg and Laborâs Josh Burns â â³â£co-penningâ³â£ an article which reminds us of the horrors of the Holocaust (Opinion, 27/1). I hope and trust this event is taught to all school students for eternity. Not only did millions die at the hands of the Nazis, the killings were indeed industrialised on a grand scale â unimaginable.
