Stunning Old photos of Cairo Castle
On Thursday, Egypt’s culture fans were delighted as a series of old photos for the Cairo Citadel during the 1880s emerged online – and its structure and shape looked to historic periods for inspiration.
The Citadel of Saladin is a medieval Islamic-era fortification in Cairo, Egypt, founded by Salah ad-Din Ayyubi and further developed by subsequent Egyptian rulers. Indeed, the iconic Citadel was the seat of government in Egypt and the residence of its rulers for nearly 700 years from the 13th to the 19th centuries, according to Egypt’s Ministry of Culture.
Nowadays, Saladin Castle is open to public visitors who can also buy affordable tickets to see the Great Mohamed Ali mosque and historical army museum. For the latter, visitors can access over three miles of chambers and passageways.
