Portland Timbers beat San Jose Earthquakes as emergency GK Logan Ketterer saves PK, Eryk Williamson notches 2 assists

There were plenty of reasons to think the Portland Timbers were destined for a difficult Saturday night in San Jose. Road trips are notoriously tough in MLS, nine Timbers players were out with injuries and the team’s form lately has been poor.
But the Timbers defied the odds and snapped a three-game losing streak by beating the Earthquakes 2-0 at Avaya Stadium on the back of two assists from Eryk Williamson.
The surprise hero of the match, however, was someone who wasn’t even on the Timbers roster a few days ago: Logan Ketterer, the emergency on-loan goalkeeper who saved a penalty kick, denying San Jose’s Chris Wondolowski an equalizer.

Injuries are a part of sports and every team must manage setbacks. But for the Portland Timbers, who had to invoke the “extreme hardship” roster rule Thursday, it’s hard to imagine the injury situation getting much worse.

After 112 meetings between the Timbers and the Seattle Sounders, it seems it’d be hard for these rivalry matches to still surprise and confound. But Sunday’s match, a 2-1 Timbers loss after a series of bizarre twists and turns, was certainly memorable – even if Timbers fans would rather forget.
What started as a cagey, close affair at Providence Park ripped wide open in the second half after chaotic back-and-forth penalties, where Diego Valeri missed his scoring chance twice, and a worrisome injury to goalkeeper Jeff Attinella, which forced the Timbers to go four spots down the depth chart to fill the spot.

The 2021 season has barely started, but already the Portland Thorns can already count the year as a success, winning NWSL Challenge Cup final Saturday in a thrilling 5-6 penalty kick shootout over Gotham FC at Providence Park after a tense 1-1 draw.
Morgan Weaver scored and sealed victory as the 14th kicker after Thorns goalkeeper AD Franch made a huge save one kick before, guessing correctly and palming away Nahomi Kawasumi’s shot.
The shootout lasted seven rounds, capping off an electric match with plenty of scoring chances. As the fourth kicker in the back-and-forth, Meghan Klingenberg sent her kick rattling off the crossbar, but in the following attempt, Gotham’s Jennifer Cudjoe did the same, keeping the drama alive.

If the all-time CONCACAF Champions League trophies leader Club América is Goliath, the Portland Timbers couldn’t find their slingshot.
The Timbers fell 3-1 in the second leg of the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals Wednesday in Mexico City for a 4-2 aggregate loss, knocking them out of the tournament. The quarterfinal finish was the Timbers’ best ever in the prestigious competition, and now the Philadelphia Union remain as the only MLS team to reach this year’s semifinals.
