A Khulna court today sent a local journalist to jail in a case filed under the controversial Digital Security Act (DSA). Shahidul Islam, judge of Khulna Metropolitan Magistrate Court-1 sent journalist MA Sabur Rana, Rampal correspondent of the Daily Loksomaj and also the president of Rampal Press Club, to jail after rejecting his bail petition, reports our Khulna correspondent.

Tayab, Khulna bureau chief of NTV, a private television channel, was arrested on April 20 following the filing of a case against the journalist under the DSA on April 19. Tayab is accused of spreading ‘negative propaganda’ on his Facebook account and of defaming the KCC mayor, who is also the president of Awami League s city unit, by publishing false news stories regarding the mayor’s alleged corruption.

The government is taking measures to ensure that no one is arrested or sued under the Digital Security Act (DSA) before investigation, Law Minister Anisul Huq has said. We are thinking about incorporating a provision in the Digital Security Act so that no case is filed and none can be arrested under this law before an inquiry into the allegations is conducted, he told The Daily Star last night. I have been engaged with the office of the Human Rights Commission in Geneva for the last few months for sharing information regarding the best practices of the Digital Security Act all over the world. I will engage in a dialogue on the same issue next week. I have a plan to form a monitoring team so that there can be no scope to abuse the law.
