Baystate Health opens temporary youth behavioral health unit
SPRINGFIELD Baystate Health opened a temporary 12-bed child/adolescent psychiatric unit on its Baystate Medical Center campus last week, as part of an effort to address the critical shortage of behavioral health services for children in the region.
“This new unit serves as a bridge allowing us to provide inpatient psychiatric care for children and adolescents over the next two years until our new Baystate-Kindred Healthcare joint venture behavioral health hospital opens with a permanent pediatric/adolescent unit,” said Dr. Barry Sarvet, chair of the Department of Psychiatry at Baystate Health.

Hospitals in Massachusetts were ranked first in the nation in Leapfrog’s Spring 2021 hospital safety report.
Leapfrog Group, an independent national watchdog organization focused on healthcare safety, has issued the report twice a year since spring 2012. Over the past nine years, three hospitals in Massachusetts have received straight A’s: Beverly Hospital, Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital in Boston, and Saint Anne’s Hospital in Fall River.
The nonprofit assigns letter grades to over 2,600 hospitals nationwide based on more than two dozen performance measures ranging from “responsiveness of hospital staff” to surgical outcomes and other measures of patient care.

NORTHAMPTON A bicyclist was injured in a collision with a car at the intersection of Pleasant Street and Wright Avenue early Tuesday afternoon, according to Northampton Police.
The 20-year-old bicyclist suffered minor injuries and was transported to Cooley Dickinson Hospital, according to Northampton Police Department Captain Victor Caputo.
The car’s driver was traveling on Wright Avenue and moved into a crosswalk to see around the corner onto Pleasant Street, when the bicyclist pedaled by on the wrong side of Pleasant Street, according to a police report, Caputo said. No citations were issued, he said.
