Mercer County Community College’s youth program, Camp College, is accepting students for Winter Session and Spring 2021.
Virtual classes for students ages 6-14 focus on science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM) with staggered start dates from December through May. Each course is taught live through Zoom and provides a project-based learning experience that combines peer learning with creativity.
Offerings range from science and planetary science study, to writing and book publishing, to coding, animation techniques and virtual reality design. A new e-Sports games-play skill builder was added this session. Two new courses will be introduced this session, including Young Authors where students write and publish books, and YouTube FX Masters where students create Hollywood-style special effects and graphics.
Although this Christmas will be different from any in history, there will be ways to celebrate.
More than any other time of year, Americans visit a church or attend a religious celebration at Christmastime. Polls show that about 60% of Americans attend some type of service in honor of the Christian holiday each year.
Due to the pandemic, many local residents are either out of the habit of attending regular services or may be uncertain where to safely attend a service.
The recent spike in COVID-19 cases won’t completely shut down the spirit of Christmas, however. Churches across Topeka, already accustomed to adapting their plans and thinking creatively, are making sure options are available this year.
Teddie Lee (Ted) Phipps, loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend, died Saturday December 12 at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital at the age of 66 after a brief illness. He was born on September 3, 1954 in Wyandotte, Michigan, the son of late Herman and Margaret Naomi Patton Phipps.
Growing up in Michigan, Ted was employed by General Motors for 30 years, where he retired from the Corvette division in Bowling Green, KY. After retiring in 2002, he found another career in the security business in Tennessee, working at Gaylord, Murray Guard, and at West Tennessee Healthcare North Hospital. Ted had a strict work ethic and was respected by all who worked with and for him.

WOODBRIDGE – The township reported 225 new COVID-19 cases over a three-day period, which brings the total number of cases to 4,620 according to Mayor John McCormac in his coronavirus report on Dec. 14.
Sixty-five new cases of COVID-19 were reported for Dec. 11, 78 new cases were reported for Dec. 12 and 82 new cases were reported for Dec. 13.
“Every number we compare and every statistic we calculate shows that we are in the worst period of the pandemic so far with a steady stream of high numbers for nearly a month,” McCormac said. “We are averaging 66 per day for the month, 71 for the last week and 75 for the last three days.”
