Professions supplementary to medicine also threaten trade union action from Tuesday

By Rathindra Kuruwita The Joint Council of Professions Supplementary to Medicine yesterday warned that they too would be compelled to take union action from 06 July 2021 unless the Health Ministry took action to redress their grievances. The Joint Council had earlier held discussions with Ministry officials over 14 demands. “However, the Ministry has done nothing to solve our longstanding problems. Instead of addressing the issues, Ministry officials are trying to win over some members of our unions to their side. They are also partial to some health sector trade unions. While they are given everything, other sectors are ignored. If people are inconvenienced by our strike, the Health Ministry must take responsibility,” President of the Joint Council, Ravi Kumudesh said.

If Colombo had been forewarned X-Press Pearl disaster could have been averted – Environment Minister

The damage caused by the MV X-Press Pearl disaster could have been averted if the Captain of the ship had informed Sri Lankan authorities of the real situation on board the vessel before it reached Colombo Port, Environment Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said yesterday. He made the observation at an event at Apeksha Cancer Hospital in Maharagama “The Colombo Port is one of the best ports in the region. I am sure we could have dealt with the incident better if we had been informed of the real situation on board,” he said. Minister Amaraweera said action would be taken to ensure that a similar incident would not take place again in the future.
