Niger heads for second round of Presidential polls

705 Almost 7.5 million people in Niger are expected to cast their vote in a run-off Sunday. During the first election on December 27, 2020, none of the 30 validated candidates for the election secured a majority of the votes and this pushed the election into a run-off where the two front runners are in contention. The Presidential run-off is between Mohamed Bazoum from the ruling Nigerien Party for Democracy and Socialism (PNDS) and former President Mahamane Ousmane of the Renewed Democratic and Republican Party. Niger’s President Niger’s President Mahamadou Issoufou is stepping down after serving two five-year terms, which will lead to the country’s first transfer of democratic power.

Niger Republic sets date for second round of voting in presidential election

A second round of voting in the inconclusive presidential elections in Niger Republic has been fixed for February 21, after the first round of voting on December 27, 2020, could not  produce a clear winner. In a statement on Sunday,Niger’s Constitutional Court (NCC), confirmed that a second round of the presidential election is to be held as no candidate had obtained an absolute majority of votes in the first round which “led to the annulment, partial or total cancellation claimed by opposition candidates” which was rejected by the Court. However, the rerun elections will be between former Prime Minister and candidate of the ruling party who was the favorite to win, Mohammed Bazoum and former President Mahamane Ousmane.

Second Round of Votes for Niger Republic s Presidential Election

No Absolute Majority of the Votes In a ruling pronounced on Sunday, Niger s Constitutional Court confirmed that a second round of the presidential election is to be held on February 21. The court noted that no candidate had obtained an absolute majority of votes in the first round whose annulment, partial or total cancellation claimed by opposition candidates was rejected by the Court. The Court receives the request of the President of the Independent National Electoral Commission (Céni) in the form, validates and proclaims the final results of the first round of the presidential elections of December 27 2020. The court, therefore, declares Mohamed Bazoum and Mahamane Ousmane candidates in the second round of the presidential elections.
