Google introduces Timelapse in Google Earth s biggest update since 2017

Washington: Google CEO Sundar Pichai has announced that a ‘Timelapse’ feature has been introduced in Google Earth, the biggest update since 2017, which will make anyone watch time unfold and witness nearly four decades of planetary change. For this Google has compiled 24 million satellite photos from the past 37 years into an interactive, explorable 4D experience. “Our planet has seen rapid environmental change in the past half-century more than any other point in human history. The new Timelapse feature in Google Earth compiles 24 million satellite photos from the past 37 years into an interactive 4D experience,” Pichai said on Thursday. “For the first time, we’ll put a vivid depiction of our rapidly changing planet into the hands of everyone, everywhere,” Rebecca Moore director of Google Earth, Earth Engine, and outreach told reporters during a news conference.

Google Earth s new feature: a timelapse of the entire planet

What if you could take the entire planet, gather over 30 years of satellite data on it, and put it all together into a simple app that can even be used on your smartphone? Well… that’s exactly what Google recently unveiled. The new features for its Timelapse allow users to zoom in on any locations they choose, viewing more than three decades of imagery. The world at our fingertips It’s true that we now have the entire planet at our fingertips in more ways than one. Even some 20-30 years ago, most people would have had a hard time imagining this. The fact that you can use a common device most of us carry in our pockets and zoom in over any corner of the Earth and see how it evolved in the past few decades speaks a lot to how much technology and scientific observation have progressed.

Watch: Google and Nasa release amazing timelapse of how Planet Earth has changed over 30 years

Deforestation and the effects of climate change are seen in sharp relief thanks to this new technology 15 April 2021 • 2:00pm Using 20 million satellite photos from the past 37 years, Google Earth can now show viewers the world from the fourth dimension – time. The work is focused on climate change, and the human impact on the world. Scientists at Nasa and Google guide the viewer through changes including forest change, urban growth, warming temperatures, sources of energy, and our world’s fragile beauty, in a set of timelapse videos. The Timelapse project was made by Nasa, the United States Geological Survey’s Landsat program, the world’s first civilian Earth observation program, and the European Union’s Copernicus satellites.
