Three Winners Split 2021 Kuskokwim Ice Classic Jackpot

The winners are Janelle Kinegak of Chefornak, Josephine Paul of Bethel, and Vicky Spencer of Bethel. Each will take home $6,981.67. The Kuskokwim Ice Classic clock stopped at 10:05 p.m. on May 6. Janelle Kinegak and Josephine Paul each guessed the minute before at 10:04 p.m., and Vicky Spencer guessed the minute after at 10:06 p.m. The three won out of 10,370 people who entered the contest. The $20,945 jackpot is the largest in recent memory for the event. Bethel Community Services Executive Director Michelle DeWitt organizes the Kuskokwim Ice Classic. She said that the contest began in the early 1980s, but reliable records of the jackpot did not begin until the early 2000s.

Illegal Facebook Gambling Surges During Pandemic

6:02 In early March, someone in a community near Bethel received a letter from the state gaming manager. It ordered them to stop conducting illegal gambling on Facebook, and to turn in their gaming equipment and records to the state.  The person who received that letter, startled, contacted Anna Bill, who was a tribal police officer in Mountain Village at the time. “They asked me to take a look at it,” Bill said. “And they were concerned about it.” Bill said that the person was concerned the letter was a potential scam, so she contacted Alaska State Troopers, who told her that the letter was indeed real. 

Kuskokwim Ice Classic Clock Has Stopped

The clock on the Kuskokwim Ice Classic tripod stopped on May 6 at 10:05 p.m. Bethel Community Services Foundation Executive Director Michelle DeWitt, who helps organize the contest, wrote in an email to KYUK that the winner of the Kuskokwim Ice Classic jackpot will likely be announced by Monday, May 10. DeWitt said that while not all entries have been analyzed yet, she believes that this year’s jackpot will be the largest since at least the early 2000s. Two winners in another Ice Classic contest have been announced: the winners of minute madness, the contest where people bet on which minute of the hour the clock will stop. This year, there were two of these minute madness contests. The winner of each takes home $10,000. Randy Esmailka of Galena won the first round.
